The Cotentin Windmill

Built in 1744, the Cotentin Windmill is a tower mill with a roof that can rotate 360°. It operated until 1848, then ceased working, unable to compete with industrial flour mills. Windmills gradually disappeared, powerless against the productivity and modernity of steam-powered machines. In 1997, the Cotentin Windmill became the first windmill in the Manche department to be restored with the Berton sail system, thanks to financial support from the General Council and the Portbail Community of Communes.

Since it opened to the public, the windmill site has welcomed nearly 10,000 visitors per year, including 1,500 to 2,000 children as part of educational workshops.
